Hilary Stewart has traveled around British Columbia and Alaska locating and learning about totem poles. In this book, she identifies the locations of many poles, the elements of the poles, and the purposes of the poles. She also has reproduced these poles through her drawings beside her descriptions. She introduces the book with a discussion of totem poles, the carvers, and the images used. Areas in Alaska whose poles are represented include Ketchikan, Wrangell, and Juneau.
